1764 The Old Course at St. Andrews is changed from 22 to 18 holes.

1834 England's King William IV declares that the St. Andrews Society is to become the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.

In 1457, King James II of Scotland unsuccessfully tried to ban the game.

Mary, Queen of Scots, was the first recorded woman golfer in 1567.

A seven-hole course was created at Royal Blackheath in London in 1608 and the club claims to be the oldest in the world.

In 1618 the 'Featherie' was introduced - a leather ball stuffed with goose feathers.

The Burghers or Burgess Golfing Society, founded in 1735 and now the Royal Burgess, claims to be Scotland's oldest properly constituted golf club.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was established in 1754 in St Andrews, Scotland.

Carnoustie. The earliest known reference is to "the gowf" being played on the Barry Links - close to Carnoustie on the Northern shores of the Firth of Tay - early in the Sixteenth Century. A club was later founded in 1842 in Carnoustie itself, and by the middle of that century Allan Robertson put in a ten hole course there.
